- Tauriel This week’s student of the week is Olwethu Mkhwanazi in grade 12. She has become a recognizable learner at Sheppie High for many reasons. She has a loving and respectful nature when dealing with students and staff.
Olwethu is a 7 time UGU Coastal Hockey player and made the KZN team last year. Apart from hockey she has played soccer and participated in athletics at school. Olly (as her fellow students call her) is also a dancer. From the young age of six she began dancing, starting with ballet and finally finding her love in Ballroom and Latin dancing.

By M.J. Tie a fly, cast, reel and hope for the best. This is a routine that Sheppie High's Liam Van Der Merwe has learned to do with skill and precision. In fact, he has done so well in fly fishing that he has been chosen to join a SAFA (South African Fishing Association) team to travel overseas and compete in a tournament in Czech Republic. From a very young age Liam, who is currently fifteen years old, has been drawn to the beach. Whether it be fishing, swimming, diving, spear fishing or body boarding you would find Liam happily among waves or sand. When not at the beach, Liam spends time with his parents and his younger brother, Declan, amongst animals of any size, kind or shape or drawing anything he lays his eyes on. At the beginning of last year, Liam's dad, Pieter Van Der Merwe who is also a renowned fisherman, entered Liam into the junior fly fishing league. Liam was competing against fellow fishermen who had been participating in these competitions their whole lives and were two to three years his senior. That did not deter Liam though, who performed phenomenally in the three gruelling meets that spanned the length of 2016 to earn himself 10th place in South African Junior fly fishing ranks and a chance to get Protea Colours and earn a place to travel overseas in the Protea team. Liam travelled to Cape Town earlier this year to compete in those Protea trials. He was placed 10th again and earned himself a place on the team going to Czech Republic. We wish Liam all the best for that competition but he whether he wins or not I know Liam will have the greatest time ever because he is only ever complete with a fishing rod in his hand. - Hurricane May “Poetry Is Just Good Gossip “
We’ve been taught to believe that great writing is the kind of writing that takes us to a mystical place, far away from our everyday experiences. Our Vampire and Harry Potter novels lure us into imagined worlds and we consider this type of writing to be art. Luthando Ncayiyana’s poetry is art in a completely opposite way. Reading his poetry allows one to relive an everyday experience with fresh eyes. It makes you feel as though the words written on the page in front of you have jumped out of your mouth and your life. -Aeron Jones Our grade 11 student of the week goes to Zethu Shude. She recently took part in a pageant between the Umzumbe municipality and Hibiscus Coast municipality. The pageant was known as ‘Queen of High Schools’. Zethu unfortunately walked away without the title, but still managed to make it into the top eight. She attended the auditions, where she received some exciting feedback from the judges. They really liked her and elected her as their brand ambassador of the entire pageant. There were some girls from our school who competed for the crown as well. Zethu currently still promotes their brand. The beaut is clearly an asset to the pageant scene.
.- M.J. Piano player, hockey captain, athlete and academic and chocolate fanatic. An impossible combination of sport, culture and academia that would render any normal human useless after a week of this strenuous programme. Thank goodness Emma Prinsloo is not any normal human.
- $he-Hulk $hozi .Congratulations to Yanga Mhatu who has been chosen as the All Rounder Student of the Week for Grade 8. Yanga has been awarded full colours for Hockey and was also a participant in the KZN Coasters A Team. Fantastic!
