-Yulisha 19 eager, energetic matrics boarded the combis and off the group went along with three enthusiastic staff members: Mrs Theron, Mrs van Tonder and Mr Smith. After a brief stop at Mnini (Shell Ultra City) the work began. The first item on the agenda was a study of the settlement patterns of the residential areas on both sides of the freeway right up to Prospection Hill. The proximity of residence in relation to industry was then focussed on.
The highlights of this year’s trip included: a brisk walk around Morningside to study the utilisation of land, interviewing a 25-year long resident of Cato Manor Informal Settlement, visiting children at the SiceluthandoEducare Centre, where students handed out toys, biscuits and sweets to the children, taking a very long boat cruise Northwards along the coastline of Durban, ice-skating at Galleria and viewing Durban from the pool deck (31st floor) of the Seaboard Hotel. A new trend was born on the ice: guys don’t fall, they “do push ups.” A lot of fun memories were made along with the valuable educational insight gained from seeing the settlement of an urban area from the perspective of a Geographic Tourist.
