In our first week back at school, Sheppie did not shy away from upcoming sporting events. The first soccer matches of the season were a good way to get the ball rolling for our Sheppie teams on home turf. All of the girls’s teams won against Kingsway. It was an especially good experience for all the girls new to the sport. The soccer boys gathered around to support our girls, showing interest in what they were witnessing. The winnings started rolling in with the u14 score being 3-2, U15 winning 4-0, u16 2-1 and the first team winning 7-0. All the players who contributed their talent to the scoreboard left with smiles and confidence. There was good sportsmanship between the players in green and our players in maroon. Hopefully we will win consistently and that the talent reaches new heights for the busy term ahead. Captain Yande Bawana said, “For the first game, the first team did exceptionally well and maintained great structure. From now on, we can only get better and hopefully achieve double figure wins. I am super proud of them. There has been very little change to the team from last year’s side. I plan on making many lasting memories this year as this is my last year.” The girls’ soccer teams excelled during a six-a-side group tournament held at Crawford College, North Coast the previous Saturday with only one practice day. The U14 girls came 12th out of 20 teams in their age group, the U15’s tied 1st place with Pinetown Girls. The U16 girls’ side played a tougher side, with 24 teams from across the province coming down. Despite 2 losses the girls still emerged victorious in 4 fixtures landing them 9th overall placing. Our rugby team tackled their first games on Friday 22 July and Saturday 23 July. They battled against schools that have had months to practice and were a full U18 squad. Wiith that our boys still managed to beat Crawford 48-0. They drew against South Coast rivals, Creston College and lost to both Kearsney and St Henrys. The boys’ soccer side managed to escape with 2 wins and 3 losses this past weekend against Kloof. The 1st team lost 2-1 after a lengthy match. U16A won 2-1, U15A won 3-0, U15B lost 4-0 and the junior U14A side lost 3-1. |
